Biral develops and manufactures biosensors, primarily for the military market but with the intention of moving, where possible into the academic/commercial sector. The company has a mixture of engineers, scientists and software development staff as well as a product production department. The systems that have been developed are generally based on optical techniques but vary from real-time generic detection systems to specific identifiers. The company also manufactures and markets characterisation instruments for airborne particles together with a range of visibility meters and present weather sensors for meteorological applications.
Main products and services:
Biral manufactures the VeroTect biosensor which is now in service with armed forces and security services worldwide. It is a real time biodetector that uses particle count, size, shape and fluorescence to detect new sources of biological aerosol entering the atmosphere. It is combined with the VeroWarn software that uses intelligent, tailored algorithms to differentiate particles with the characteristics of a biological hazard from the natural and pollutant constituents of the atmosphere. The company also manufactures the Aspect particle size and shape instrument that is used as a non-specific real time warning device in a number of military biodetection systems.
Collaborations Sought:
Biral has been, and currently is, involved in a number of collaborative ventures to build prototype systems including a fluorescence lidar and a compact biological identification system. Other proposals for joint ventures would be welcome and would receive serious consideration. If appropriate, the company would license IP to enhance that available to it in-house.
